Tip Ins is a weekly update for all the news that happened in the NHL.

Marc Staal takes a puck to the eye. Visor debate reborn. (NBC Sports)

  • Two nights ago, New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal took a deflected puck to the eye. He is expected to make a full recovery, but the conversation doesn’t end there. With this event, it has re-sparked the debate of whether visors should be mandatory in the NHL. Many NHLers have varying opinions on the subject. (New York Times)
  • Chris Pronger held a press conference today where he talked about his concussion, his off-ice life and retirement. He said that he’s not ready to retire and will “continue to work towards playing again.” On dealing with his concussion he said,”You get agitated quickly when the symptoms add up, loud noises, kids running around in the house, you get pissed off because you have a headache and it gets worse and worse.” It’s a very unfortunate situation and I wish him the best. (Philly)

  • With the recent visor debate, a few Penguins voice their opinions of the subject. Defenseman Brooks Orpik, who doesn’t wear a visor, says one might be in his near future. Other Penguins, Craig Adams, Tanner Glass, and Mark Eaton, have no plans to start wearing one. (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)
  • I’m sure you’ve heard of the “Colorado Avalanche wouldn’t re-sign Ryan O’Reilly so he signed an offer sheet with the Calgary Flames but because he played overseas after the NHL season started he would have had to go through waivers if the Avs didn’t match it so the Flames could have lost a 1st and 3rd round draft pick for nothing” situation. On top of that, neither Ryan O’Reilly agent nor the Flames/Avs GMs knew about it. Yikes! (SportsNet)
  • Lucasfilm made Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov change his Star Wars-themed mask. Apparently, the colors were wrong, so they weren’t having any of that. (SB Nation)
  • Here’s so news to me. Apparently there are 34 different infractions that can be committed during an NHL game. Of those 34, 29 have hand signals to demonstrate what foul has been committed. The remaining 5 penalties with no hand motion? Headbutting, kicking, match penalty, throwing equipment, and too many men on the ice. Makes no since why they couldn’t come up with something for those. (Puck Daddy)
  • Stephen A. Smith is a moron. Stick to basketball. That’s all I have to say on that. (Awful Announcing)
  • VIDEO: Evgeni Malkin is known for his sick mitts and going through opposing defenses. Well, here’s SportsCentre’s Top 10 Evgeni Malkin Plays. (YouTube)
