The NHL Winter Classic will take place on January 1, 2014.

Let’s try this again. Today it was announced at a press conference that the 2014 NHL Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be arriving fashionably late. A year later, to be exact. The event is set to take place at “The Big House” in Ann Harbor, Michigan on January 1, 2014 in front of 100,000+ screaming fans.

Leafs President Tom Anselmi mentioned the Maple Leafs have 276 wins and the Red Wings 275 within their rivalry. But Red Wings general manager Ken Holland was quick to point out, the Wings have 646 points to the Leafs’ 645. Their overall records within the rivalry are; 275-273-93-3 for Detroit and 276-275-93-0 for Toronto. The two teams don’t play each other until next season, so those numbers will hold until then.

“The history of the teams’ cross-border rivalry, the nobility of The Big House and the growing tradition of the NHL Winter Classic will raise the anticipation for this event to new heights. We are delighted to offer our fans a spectacle at which the energy will be unmatched and the demand for tickets will be unprecedented. For anyone involved in any way — as a player, a coach, an official, a fan — this NHL Winter Classic will be a truly memorable hockey moment.” – NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman

It was also announced that HBO will be returning for next year’s Winter Classic. 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic will return in December to profile the two teams leading up to the event. Viewing in Canada will be available on Sportsnet.

There will again be a Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs Alumni Showdown on New Year’s Eve set to be hosted at Comerica Park. They will don a different jersey from the ones players will wear. However, this year with so many alums expected to attend, two alumni games will be played. Red Wings GM Ken Holland said he’s going to make a push to get Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom to play.

With the return of the biggest outdoor NHL game, there has been talk of having more. NHL COO John Collins on multiple outdoor games: “We’ve been talking about it for a while. But I think now we’re looking at it real hard.” He didn’t give exact dates but did confirm multiple outdoor games could happen as soon as next season. There have been reports that a game involving the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium is all but done. The New York Rangers and Yankee Stadium have been rumored as well, but that’s more speculative. The Heritage Classic is also expected to make its return next season. European Premiere Games will not be returning.
