Tip Ins is a weekly update for all the news that happened in the NHL.
- VIDEO: On Friday night there was a line brawl that took place between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. It got ugly in more ways than one. Their were disagreements. There were fights. There were injuries(including a concussion). There was an assault. It wasn’t pretty for anyone. But the thing that caused the most outrage was when noted fighter, Flyers goalie Ray Emery went down the ice to fight an unwilling goalie in Braden Holtby. The NHL decided there was no wrong doing and Emery received no further discipline. You can try to argue “a fight is a fight”, but here’s what Emery said after the game: “He didn’t want to fight and I basically said, ‘Protect yourself.’ He didn’t really have much of a choice.” That’s not a fight, that’s an assault. - Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov is facing serious allegations. Last week, it was alleged by his girlfriend that he came home drunk, kicked her, knocked her down, dragged her by her hair and told her in Russian that “if this were Russia, he would have beat her more.” Serious stuff. He faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, a felony, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. He started their most recent game to the dismay of many. (Denver Post)
- The NHLPA is preparing to sue the state of Tennessee and have them reimburse players for a ‘Professional Privilege Tax’ that has been imposed on them since the 2009-10 season. The state has taxed NHL players $2,500 each time they were on their club’s playing roster for a game in Nashville. The Players’ Association believes this is unfair and possibly unconstitutional, saying a player making the league minimum would in fact lose money playing there and would be better off financially by not playing.
