Free Agent Frenzy

Easily one of my favorite days of the year. (TSN)

Happy Apocalypse Day!

Tip Ins is a weekly update for all the news that happened in the NHL.

  • Imagine this: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Steven Stamkos, Alex Ovechkin, and Claude Giroux are ALL unrestricted free agents(UFA)… at the same time. You pooping your pants yet? Because if the NHLPA disclaims OR decertifies, the NHL’s lawsuit says that’s what’s going to happen. Every player in the NHL will become a UFA. Imagine how dumb Minnesota Wild owner, Craig Leipold would look. He already paid Zach Parise and Ryan Suter $10 million each in bonus money. Yikes! And you thought Free Agent Frenzy was crazy now… (Sporting News)
  • Hey Flyers fans, remember Mike Richards and Jeff Carter? How would feel about having them back on the team? More specifically, if they retire before their contracts expire, how would you feel about having their cap hits back? With the NHL’s offer, that could actually happen. (Broad Street Hockey)
  • An anonymous owner gave ESPN their idea for a CBA offer. The details of it give you the impression of… compromise? Yes, and in some small circles, it’s been seen as a good negotiating point. No harm taking a closer look at it. (ESPN)

NHL Lockout

Lockout: Day 90 (Bryant Archway)

Earlier today, TSN reported the NHLPA Executive Board voted to give the players a vote to proceed with a Disclaimer of Interest. Its long be suspected that the NHLPA would choose to dissolve via this or decertification. The only difference being, a disclaimer of interest happens immediately, but I would take months if the NHLPA chose to decertify. If the NHLPA elects to disclaim interest, it would give the players the ability to file anti-trust lawsuits against the NHL because they would no longer be represented by a union. The NHL caught word of the report and acted swiftly by filing a Class-Action Complaint and an Unfair Labor Practice Charge. Things just got interesting.

This is an actual photo from one of the CBA meetings…I think. (Charles Fincher)

  • There’s been a lot of decertification talk recently. Some people have an idea of what it means, but most don’t know the ramifications. One being that doing this could end the season entirely. Here’s a Decertification Q & A to help. (CBC)
  • On last weeks Tip Ins, we talked about Washington Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik making selfish comments about the lockout and firing Donald Fehr. Montreal Canadiens’ forward Erik Cole sounded off against him. Though Caps goalie Michal Neuvirth “100% agreed” with Hamrlik in the beginning, he has since apologized. Caps forward Troy Brouwer then said his teammates were “selling us [the union] out”. Even Winnipeg Jets’ captain Andrew Ladd took a few shots. Then the other Caps goalie, Braden Holtby said he agreed with Brouwer. Man. This lockout is going to be the end of the Washington Capitals. Donald Fehr’s thoughts on Hamrlik’s comments? He’s cool with it. (NBC Sports)
  • The Phoenix Coyotes have a home! Glendale City Council voted Tuesday night to approve a 20-year arena lease with potential Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison. Yes they have a home, but they still don’t have a non-NHL owner. They have until January 31, 2013 to change that, otherwise, the entire voting process starts over. Good luck with that.
